When someone is working through mental health challenges, therapy is often an important part of healing. But sometimes support is also needed outside of the therapy room — in everyday life, at school, at home, in the community, or while learning how to manage responsibilities, relationships, and personal goals.
That is where Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program services — commonly known as PRP services — can help.
At August Rose Health Center, our PRP services support children, adolescents, and adults across Maryland as they build the skills, confidence, and stability they need to function more successfully in daily life.
What Does PRP Stand For?
In behavioral health, PRP stands for Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program. (You may also see "PRP" used in medical or cosmetic settings to mean something entirely different — here, we're talking only about mental health rehabilitation services.)
PRP provides structured, goal-focused support for individuals whose mental health symptoms affect their daily functioning. It is not a replacement for therapy. Instead, PRP works alongside therapy to help clients apply coping skills, strengthen independence, and work toward their personal wellness goals.
What Do PRP Services Help With?
PRP services help individuals build practical life skills and improve their ability to manage day-to-day responsibilities. Depending on the client's age, needs, and treatment goals, PRP supports areas such as:
Managing emotions and stress
Building healthy coping skills
Improving communication and social skills
Strengthening routines and daily structure
Practicing problem-solving skills
Increasing independence
Building confidence and self-esteem
Navigating school, work, family, or community challenges
Connecting with community resources
Supporting wellness, recovery, and long-term stability
For children and adolescents, PRP often includes support with school-related challenges, peer relationships, emotional regulation, family communication, and age-appropriate life skills.
For adults, PRP often focuses on independent living skills, community integration, managing responsibilities, strengthening social supports, and working toward personal goals.

How Is PRP Different From Therapy?
Therapy provides a clinical space to process emotions, trauma, relationships, symptoms, and mental health concerns with a licensed mental health professional.
PRP services are more skill-based and community-focused. PRP helps clients practice and strengthen the tools they may be learning in therapy.
For example, a client might talk with their therapist about anxiety, depression, or family stress. PRP then helps that client work on real-life strategies — creating routines, practicing coping skills, improving communication, or identifying safe and supportive community resources.
Together, therapy and PRP create a stronger circle of support.
Who May Benefit From PRP Services?
PRP is often a good fit for individuals who have a mental health diagnosis and experience challenges with daily functioning. This may include difficulties with school, home life, relationships, self-care, emotional regulation, community involvement, or maintaining routines.
At August Rose Health Center, PRP services are available for eligible children, adolescents, and adults who are connected to therapy and meet program requirements.
How Do You Get Started With PRP? (Referrals)
Because PRP is a clinical service, a licensed mental health provider must refer you to the program — individuals cannot self-refer.
If you already work with a therapist or psychiatric provider, ask them about a referral to PRP services.
If you are not yet connected to care, contact our team. We can help you understand your options, get connected to the right level of support, and determine the next steps.
Our staff can answer questions about eligibility, referrals, and whether PRP may be a good fit for you or your loved one.
Does Maryland Medicaid Cover PRP Services?
Yes. At August Rose Health Center, PRP services are covered by Maryland Medicaid for eligible individuals. Our team can help you confirm coverage when you reach out.
Where Are PRP Services Provided?
We provide PRP services throughout Maryland, and we meet people where they are. Depending on the client's needs and program guidelines, PRP staff may work with clients in the:
Home
School
Community
Office
Telehealth setting
This flexibility allows support to happen in the real-life environments where clients are building skills and working toward their goals.
What Makes PRP Person-Centered?
At August Rose Health Center, we believe support should never be one-size-fits-all.
Our PRP services are person-centered, meaning each client's goals, strengths, needs, culture, environment, and lived experiences are considered. We work with clients to identify what matters most to them and develop goals that support their personal growth and wellness.
PRP is not about doing things for the client. It is about walking alongside the client as they build skills, increase confidence, and move toward greater independence.
PRP and the 8 Dimensions of Wellness
Our approach to care is rooted in whole-person wellness. PRP services can support several areas of wellness, including:
Emotional Wellness: Learning coping skills, managing stress, and understanding emotions.
Social Wellness: Building healthy relationships and communication skills.
Intellectual Wellness: Strengthening problem-solving, learning, and decision-making skills.
Occupational Wellness: Exploring school, work, volunteer, or career-related goals.
Environmental Wellness: Creating safe, supportive, and structured environments.
Financial Wellness: Building awareness around budgeting, resources, and responsibilities when appropriate.
Physical Wellness: Supporting healthy routines, self-care, and connection to needed resources.
Spiritual Wellness: Exploring meaning, values, purpose, and personal identity in a way that is respectful to each client.
What Can Clients Expect?
Clients receiving PRP services can expect support that is respectful, strengths-based, and goal-oriented. Services focus on helping clients make progress toward their individualized goals — practicing skills, talking through challenges, identifying resources, and creating realistic steps toward growth.
Why PRP Matters
Mental health recovery does not only happen during appointments. Growth also happens in everyday moments — when a child learns to express frustration safely, when a teenager practices asking for help, when an adult builds a routine, or when a client begins to believe they are capable of moving forward.
PRP services help bridge the gap between clinical treatment and everyday life. At August Rose Health Center, we are committed to providing compassionate, culturally responsive, and empowering support to individuals and families across our community.
