Understanding Beauty Standards and Their Impact

Beauty standards are subjective. In a society that often prioritizes Eurocentric features, many of us feel the pressure to compromise our true selves. I understand this struggle. Why wouldn’t you want to fit in and gain the validation, affection, and success that seems to come with conforming to these ideals?

However, the truth is that no amount of compromise can fulfill the ever-shifting demands of modern beauty standards. What’s at stake? A negative self-image, decreased self-trust, and financial sacrifices. Treatments like GLP-1s, contouring procedures, and fillers can be quite expensive. In severe cases, the pressure to conform can lead to anxiety, depression, and even eating disorders.

The Sacrifice of Self

When beauty standards become unattainable, we often find ourselves sacrificing parts of who we are. This sacrifice can lead to the development of mental health conditions. Even if symptoms don’t meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental illness, the impact on our ability to align with our true selves can be significant.

Losing connection with oneself is a common experience. It creates mental blocks that prevent us from uncovering our true identities and desires. Beauty standards dictate our thoughts, robbing us of the chance to cultivate a strong sense of self. As humans, we are meant to grow and evolve. The pursuit of unattainable beauty can have profound effects, and overcoming the psychological barriers that arise often requires years of commitment.

Finding Your Way Back to Yourself

So, what can you do if you find yourself paying the price of impossible beauty standards? Start by identifying negative thoughts about your body. Remember, your body encompasses your hair, skin tone, weight, height, body shape, skin conditions, and more. Becoming aware of these negative thoughts is the first step. Challenge them and explore their origins. This process can help you reconnect with the true narrative of who you are and what you value.

Practical Exercises for Self-Discovery

Some exercises that can assist you in this journey include:

  • Journaling: Write down your thoughts and feelings about your body. This can help clarify your emotions and identify patterns.

  • Thought Tracking: Keep a record of negative thoughts as they arise. This awareness can empower you to challenge them.

  • The Downward Arrow Technique: This cognitive-behavioral technique helps you explore the underlying beliefs behind your thoughts.

If you find yourself caught in this cycle and are seeking a way out, begin with awareness and intentionality. One effective way to foster change and self-work is to partner with a licensed mental health professional. A professional can help you recognize patterns, thoughts, and feelings that may be difficult to see on your own. Together, you can build a game plan to address unhealthy habits and behaviors, paving the way for an improved quality of life.

The Importance of Support

No matter where you are on your journey toward self-satisfaction, remember that you are not alone. You deserve the chance to care for yourself in whatever form serves you best. Seeking support is a courageous step toward healing and self-acceptance.

Please take care of yourself always, in all ways.
