Ajee Anderson

OMHC Mental Health Therapist-Intern

I am a Counseling Psychology graduate student at Bowie State University and a clinical intern with August Rose Health Center. I earned my Bachelor of Applied Science in History from Eastern New Mexico University and am a U.S. Air Force veteran. Growing up in Baltimore, serving in the military, and living in different parts of the world exposed me to lives, realities, and experiences of pain very different from my own. What those experiences reflected back to me, again and again, was the depth of what I did not know. They forged a silence in me, a willingness to listen, observe, and remain curious before assuming I understand another person's reality. That curiosity led me to counseling and continues to shape the clinician I am becoming. My clinical interests include trauma and emotional processing, intergenerational and parent-child relationships, family estrangement and reconciliation, and the ways culture and lived experience shape family dynamics. I am particularly interested in understanding these experiences within Black families and communities. I also have a strong interest in autism spectrum and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. I am inspired by the complexity of the human experience and by the opportunity to understand how people make meaning of and carry what has happened to them. There is something deeply human to me about being trusted with another person's story. I see counseling as both a privilege and a challenge, an opportunity to meet people within their reality, remain curious about what I do not yet understand, and walk alongside them through experiences that may be difficult to face alone. I am drawn to this work by a belief in our capacity to heal, and by the possibility that healing within one person can ripple through families, relationships, and communities.
